One of the most important parts of color grading is managing the contrast of the image. While it is important to tackle the contrast on a shot by shot basis for perfect shot matching, this DCTL is intended to define the overall global contrast of the show. It is meant as a look building device that should be placed rather late in the node tree. One of its main characteristics is the gentle film-like s-curve contrast that mimics traditional analog film. This type of curve is necessary to create a smooth roll-off into the blacks and also into the highlights.
To further dampen the highlights you can use the Preserve Highlights slider and the Preserve Shadows slider lets you bring back detail in the low end of the image. In order to make the highlights even more creamy this DCTL comes with a dedicated Highlight Tint slider. After introducing a gentle tint you are also able to adjust its temperature. And of course the shadows can be treated similarly with the Shadow Tint sliders.
Besides those the DCTL allows you to add Color Density which darkens highly saturated colors. Since this tool is color space aware it does not matter which camera the footage was shot on, you will always get a perfect photorealistic exposure and contrast adjustment.
And if you only want to influence the luminance but keep the original saturation you can do so with the Mix Chroma slider.
